Post Vacay Blues: Getting Back Into The Groove

“No man needs a vacation so much as the man who just had one”

Elbert Hubbard

OMG I don’t think that there could ever be a more truer quote on the face of this entire planet. Like literally. There’s undoubtedly going to be an inevitable sorrow that’s always associated with entering “real life” again, what with having just experienced days of endless amounts of travel, discovery & consuming copious amounts of tasty, foreign foods. I mean, I’m sure that we’ve all suffered from a bit of PTD (post travel depression) here & there – I did this past week, that’s for sure – so I thought I’d share 5 simple ways to ease back into routine once the vacation has come to an end. PLUS not to mention, we all just came off summer, which is essentially one season long binge of holidays & vacations! So enjoy!

5 Ways To Get Back Into The Groove

1. Get Right Back To The Grind

I know it’s super tempting to take the day off work prior to gettin’ back into that work flow – but I actually think that you could be doing yourself a bit of a disservice!! I find that I’m more productive when I am forced to re-enter my regular routine almost immediately – no lagging allowed!!  This is an especially important step for us procrastinators, because this method simply does not allow for the slightest bit of procrastination whatsoever!

Be sure that you’re well prepared for the “return to routine”… before you actually leave! I made sure to complete simple tasks for my “return to work week” prior to actually leaving! This made getting back to the grind a WHOLE lot easier & smoother!

Plus… this way you don’t actually have time to miss the vacation 😛

2. Plan Your Next Vacation

Let’s not all be dramatic. Of COURSE it’s sad when the vacation comes to an end, but more than likely you’re going to be travelling sometime in the future. The end of my holidays was somewhat alleviated by the fact that my boyfriend & I had already started creating wishlists & were daydreaming about our next little adventure!

Psychologically, acknowledging that we would return & make brand new memories was a BIG help!

3. Eat Well Balanced Meals – LOTS of Fresh Foods!!!!

When Andrei & I were in Romania we ate the MOST amazing foods!! Side Note: I’m actually nearly one hundred percent positive that french fries are the official food of Romania because literally every single meal at every single restaurant & home that we visited was served with french fries. Not joking. I seriously never thought in my entire life that I would ever say that I was sick of eating french fries, but this couldn’t be more true of my time spent in Romania!

So I’m sure you can only imagine just how good it felt to eat fresh fruits and veggies upon my return! Eating well just makes you feel good... period. Whole, nutrient dense foods play a major role in our mood – affecting hormones, brain structure & influencing how different cells in our brain communicate with one another!!! Normalizing your post vacation diet back to a more nutritious meal plan will help keep you happy! ALSO – be sure to keep active & make regular trips to the gym! This will also help to keep you on track & fight travel fatigue… plus like Elle Woods always says, “Exercise give you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.” 😛

4. Appreciate The Memories

It can be super easy to constantly reminisce & pine for the days of your holidays. I mean.. GUILTY AS CHARGED. I cried like a total baby at the airport in Romania. HOWEVER, I tried to remind myself that I was fortunate enough to actually experience those wonderful memories we had formed during our travels! Try to appreciate that the trip actually happened instead of just focusing on the fact that you’re sad it’s over.

5. Integrate Elements of “Travel” Into Your Daily Life

This is something that I try REALLY hard to incorporate into my life!! Whether that be post-work walks through a new, undiscovered neighborhood, day trips to a close destination on the weekend, or taking a trip to the farmer’s market on a quiet Sunday. Creating a lifestyle that is filled with new & exciting experiences that mimic travelling can be oh so fulfilling & will totally tide you over until your next serious case of wanderlust sets in!

How do YOU get back into the post-vacay groove?!
