Water 101

Post by: Jamie Fairbairn, Holistic Nutrition Student & Competitive Water Skier

Hey guys! I’d love to share the recent “water journey” I’ve been on with all of you (trust me- it’s actually fun!). As a Canadian (and part-time, wannabe Floridian) water is all around me… like everywhere! How lucky am I?!
You may not know this about me, but I’m actually a competitive water skier. I spend so much time in and around water that when I’m not wet, I’m seriously like a fish that’s struggling for air ;). So naturally, when I began studying nutrition and learning more about the properties of water, this new subject immediately grabbed my attention and I hope it does the same for you!

Water on Water

Admittedly, this “water journey” grew out of my own vanity. I regularly visit Nourishe, an organic salon in Florida, and they had suggested that I drink 2 gallons (7.6 Liters) of ‘special hydrogen-enriched, hydrating’ water within 36 hours prior to my facial. Initially I was all, “ok, no problem… I drink lots of water so this will be easy”… and then I went home.

Fast forward to the next day, when the drinking actually began… WOAH! It was SO hard. I had this1 gallon, glass jug so that I could track my progress and I could’ve SWORN that this jug was somehow magical and bottomless. It seriously never ended.

Fun Facts

Why drink water before a facial? Well let’s actually broaden that to why water is so important in our day to day lives. For starters:

– the human body is made up of 75% water in volume (but you knew that already)
– 99% of humans are made up of water molecules (now it’s getting cool… amiright?!)
– we may absorb up to 3L of water in one shower!
– water may prevent muscle soreness
– water may decrease chronic fatigue
– hydrated bodies may age slower

Water Quality… What’s the deal?

Is water in the oceans, rivers, clouds, bottles, and in our taps all the same?

Nope! A smart fellow named Masaru Emoto devoted his life to the study of water and water crystals. If you want to learn more about his work, check out the “Water Peace Project”.

Tips & Tricks

When you’re looking for great quality water, the first step is to ensure that it’s being stored properly. For example, glass containers or bottles are typically much better for the water quality than plastic.

Secondly, become more mindful of the type of water you purchase and its properties. I’m currently learning about, and self-experimenting with, hydrogen enriched water, oxygen enriched water, and dynamically enhanced water.

Hydrogen Water

As I’m sure you’re all well aware, Water (AKAL H2O), is a molecule made up of one atom of oxygen bound to two atoms of hydrogen. In our bodies, hydrogen enriched water may have some seriously amazing effects because the hydrogen (which is a natural part of water anyways) may be easier for our bodies to use.

Please know, I’m not an expert or a scientist but hydrogen water has totally sparked my interest because of the amazing experience I’ve had with it. It is BEYOND hydrating! I drank my 3.8L/day of water each day for two days before that facial and I didn’t have to wake up at night to pee (that never happens, even when I’m not hydrated). Instead of flushing quickly through my system, my body absorbed the water and it was able to do its job!

Hydrogen water may:

– provide superior hydration
– be able to penetrate easily through the cell membrane
– be an antioxidant
– help to detoxify and flush toxins from the body

Do you have a favourite type of water?! Please let us know! This exciting water journey continues and I’d love to hear what water you love!
