When the temperatures start to increase, so do the number of save-the-dates, bridal showers, bachelorettes & wedding invitations that seemingly slide right on into my mailbox. When you’re in the throes of wedding season many 20-somethings (myself included) can attend upwards of ten wedding-related events over the course of one summer alone! So as the competition for sought-after venues & vendors heats up among brides (it IS engagement season after all), maybe it’s time to consider another not-so popular, but equally as romantic, season to tie the knot? I’m talking… winter!
Now before you immediately disregard all that I have to say because you’ve never heard of such a preposterous, ill-conceived concept… hear me out! The winter season has a whole lot to offer when it comes to weddings, which is exactly why my fiancé & I have chosen the chilliest season of the year to host our very own nuptials! Why? Read below!
Reasons to Have a Winter Wedding
Because who wants to fight tooth & nail over sought-after, dream wedding vendors? Having a wedding during the off-season increases the chances that you’ll get to work with your favourite, dream wedding vendors on the day YOU want. Andrei & I had absolutely zero issues securing our venue, caterers, florist, photographer or dj…. which makes for a relatively stress-free, easy wedding planning experience!
Literally some vendors laughed at us when we were nervous about booking them with just 4 months to go – they were all available.
Warm Winter Comfort Foods
Gourmet Mac N’ Cheese & Boozy Hot Chocolate, anyone? Having a winter wedding means you get to stray from a more traditional wedding menu & opt for warm, stick-to-your-bones comfort foods instead! My wedding dress really sucks my stomach in quite nicely – plus, let’s be real I’ll probably be coming off of a ten day, moderately intense pre-wedding cleanse – so I literally plan on unapologetically consuming ALL of the winter comfort foods on my wedding day.
If you’re lucky enough, & your wedding day happens to coincide with a light dusting of snow, then you’re in for some pretty spectacular wedding photos! Snowy wedding photos are actually what first drew me to the concept of a winter wedding. I’m a tad superficial what can I say. But also – they’re just so romantic, whimsical & magical! Not to mention… you don’t have to stress about the potential of rainy wedding day.
Winter Bachelorette Parties
Envision a cozy, snowy spa-escape for your bachelorette party near a mountainside resort. This is very much the vibe that I’m going for & I CANNOT freakin’ wait… T-minus two months! Winter Bachelorette Parties have the potential to be very unique & very fun! Matching flannel pajamas, outdoor hot tubs, saunas, & snowy adventures? Yes please, sign me up!
Winter Wedding Apparel
If you’re taking outdoor winter wedding photos, then you’re going to need something to keep your wedding party warm! I love the idea of adding faux-fur stoles to your wedding ensemble for something a bit more glam, or alternatively a gorgeous red flannel blanket for a look that’s a bit more rustic & casual! Either would be absolutely stunning & striking against a snowy landscape!
Give Your Guests Something to Celebrate!
Attending a wedding in the winter will give your guests something to celebrate & look forward to during what would otherwise be an overly “drab” time of the year! People tend to socialize a whole lot less during the winter, so getting everyone together for a wedding will be equal parts exciting & refreshing for every single one of your guests!
Twinkling lights, roaring fireplaces, & dark snowy skies… you can’t get more intimate or romantic than that! You’re not going to have to invest a whole lot into creating a romantic wedding ambiance because Mother Nature has pretty much got it covered for you!
I’ve been having a really fun time with winter wedding décor! I love exploring pieces that are a bit moodier, rustic & whimsical; all of which perfectly lend themselves to the winter season! You can get quite creative with décor during the winter so don’t be afraid to go a little bit outside the box!
Perfect Honeymoon Season
One of the best parts about a winter wedding? Escaping the cold snow & jetting off to a hot, tropical honeymoon destination!
So… have I convinced you yet? Would you ever opt for a winter wedding?!
